Last month, I had the opportunity to attend an exclusive leadership dinner as part of the Inclusive Leadership Team at the Frank & Eileen™ Center for Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership. This immersive experience was the second part of a leadership series focused on Hospitality Intelligence (HQ), continuing the themes introduced in our virtual masterclass around etiquette, presence, and intentional networking. The evening, held at Smith & Wollensky in Wellesley, was led by hospitality expert Stephanie Browne, MEd, CHIE: author, wine educator, and founder of Sipping Sense. Her work focuses on making hospitality more accessible while still maintaining a strong sense of sophistication and professionalism. Throughout the evening, we explored how leadership extends beyond formal titles and into how we carry ourselves in professional and social environments: through awareness, communication, and connection. It was such a meaningful opportunity to engage in thoughtful conversations with a small cohort of student leaders and faculty, each bringing unique perspectives and experiences to the table. Grateful to the Frank & Eileen Center team and everyone who made this experience possible, and to my table guests Dr. Shakenna K. Williams, Donna Levin, Stephanie Browne, MEd, CHIE, and Anika Balaraju for the insightful conversations throughout the evening. On April 2nd, the eve of my birthday, I stepped into elite rooms, was recognized as an advancing leader, and deepened my ability to lead with presence, poise, and power. This moment I once only dreamed of. My leadership and accomplishments are truly beginning to come full circle. I was nominated and selected to participate in an Exclusive Leadership Masterclass with the President’s Office (President Stephen Spinelli & President's wife Carol Spinelli), a highly curated, two-part experience designed for a small cohort of emerging leaders across campus. To be identified as an “advancing leader” in a room filled with such accomplished, high-pedigree individuals is something I am still processing. This experience, led by hospitality expert Stephanie Browne, MEd, CHIE, centered around Hospitality Intelligence, the art of navigating professional and social spaces with confidence, intention, and influence. One lesson that stayed with me: “As leaders advance, an increased exposure to food and wine becomes an unspoken expectation of the role.” And with that lesson came a full-circle moment. From dreaming as a kid about dressing elegantly, being chauffeured to meaningful spaces, and sitting at tables where your name is known and respected… to actually living that reality, seated at a private, three-course dining experience at Smith & Wollensky 🍽️ That moment reminded me that preparation meets opportunity, and suddenly, you’re in the room. This wasn’t just a dinner. It was an immersive experience in: • Executive presence • Social fluency • Strategic networking • Leading through connection Surrounded by a cohort of just 19 global leaders, every conversation held weight. Every interaction mattered. Every detail, from posture to presence, was intentional. Prestigious programs like this, led by the Frank & Eileen Center and the President’s Office, are shaping the next generation of leaders, not just to succeed in rooms, but to own them. I am incredibly grateful to those who saw something in me and spoke my name in rooms I wasn’t in. A special thank you to Denicia Ratley & Sadie Burton-Goss, Ph.D. and everyone who advocated for me to be in this prestigious space, your support does not go unnoticed. This experience affirmed something I deeply believe: Leadership is not just about what you achieve; it’s about how you show up authentically to achieve it. I'm glad my genuine authenticity is paying off, and trust me, I’m just getting started. P.S. Next time I go to an upscale restaurant, you can bet on the fact that I will ask for the "Sommelier" (suh-muh-yay): wine expert in a restaurant. -Semaj C.
The tour served as a great environment and catalyst for learning both about the wine industry and the experiences and life issues of the folks on the van, around the table and conducting the tours. It was a most enjoyable time for me and one that I would repeat with no hesitation.
